THE BETHS HAPPY UNHAPPY

You'd be hard pressed to think of a better title for the latest single from New Zealand pop-punk pedlars The Beths. On 'Happy Unhappy' cheery guitar lines and breezy backing vocals stand in direct contrast with the deeply melancholy lyrics that make up the expertly written chorus. The oxymoronic track exposes the vulnerability you feel when you start to fall for someone, as singer/guitarist Elizabeth Stokes recounts, "...I was fine on my own, tolling steady like a dial tone, couldn't you leave me, I was happy unhappy." Seemingly determined not to be too much of a downer, the band's simple yet brilliantly charming lyric video features an anonymous individual sporting a pineapple mask, which is sure to get you smiling. -Holly Mullineaux
